First things first- If you expected Billa-2 to be a stylish film, you will not be disappointed. Problem is, apart from a few stale gimmicks borrowed from a bunch of Hollywood films -- nothing really happens in this film at all. It is a miscalculation on the part of both the film's writer and director Chakri Toleti who has to take the blame for it.

Packaged snazzily with a charismatic hero like Ajith, glossy-finish camerawork by RD Rajasekhar, exotic locations and fancy costumes, every frame of the film probably cost lakhs to put together, but it still feels like a hollow piece in the end because the story doesn't hold.

The film has no soul, not even a wafer thin story or any smart packaging in terms of commercial elements associated with a big hero film. In short, director Chakri Toleti has made a film without understanding the basic structure of commercial mass films and it lacks local flavour.

The story is a prequel on how David Billa became the biggest underworld don of all times. David Billa (Ajith) a refugee (?) comes to Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and his journey begins into crime. First he starts as a local diamond smuggler who graduates into drugs and later international arms smuggling. On the way up the crime syndicate, he meets a lot of treacherous opponents whom he eliminates one by one and becomes the dreaded don. But the treatment's so over-the-top, so indulgent that it fails to establish any connect.

In all fairness, the first half of the film is marginally better than the second. If Billa-2 is salvaged to some extent, it's thanks to Ajith’s irresistible screen presence and his spontaneous approach to the character. Sadly you have no words of praise for good looking villains Sudhanshu and Vidyut and girls Parvathy Omanakuttan and Bruna Abdullah who can't rise above the flawed script.

Do we really want impressionable young children to see this kind of violence where people are brutally chopped, throat slit and killed at regular intervals? You cringe in the scene when Ajit kills the corrupt policeman (KK) when he is having kinky sex in a brothel!

Don't go in expecting too much, perhaps you won't be too disappointed. Watch Billa-2 for its stylish presentation....

Billa 2 Review Preview

Ajith's magnum opus Billa 2 has been released worldwide today at nearly 1200 screens. Now here is the opportunity for all Ajith fans to write their own review about Billa 2 movie. Billa 2 stars Ajith, Parvathy Omanakuttan and Bruna Abdullah in the lead roles while music for the film has been scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja and it is directed by Chakri Toleti. Billa 2 is prequel to blockbuster Billa.

Countdown- 1 day to Billa 2

Ajith’s Billa 2 is only a few hours from being premiered. The nearest place from Kollywood capital Chennai where the film will be first shown is “special VIP show” in Colombo tonight at 9.30 pm.

On Tuesday evening, Billa 2 hero Ajith held a preview of the film for his close family members at Four Frames preview theatre. Ajith’s wife Shalini and his parents were some of the handful of people who saw the film. Later the star along with his director Chakri Toleti went to Tirupathi for a “Thanks Giving”.

A press meet of Billa 2 is being arranged at a five star hotel in Chennai on Thursday (July 12) noon, where the producer will introduce the entire cast and crew. Ajith, as usual will not be attending the event. The press show of the film will be held at Four Frames on Friday morning.

In Chennai the first show is likely to be at Rakki complex in Ambatur in the wee hours of Friday (July 13) at 4am. The rest of the suburban theatres will start screening B2 from early morning 5.30am. The Chennai high-end multiplexes will start screening the film only from12.30 pm.


Billa 2 running time is only 2 hours and 7 minutes, which has made theatres drool. They can hold multiple shows of the film on the opening day. Aascar Ravichandran who is distributing the film said the screen count has exceeded 550 by Wednesday evening. 

Billa 2 holds its first press meet

Finally the producers of Billa 2, In Entertainment and Wide Angle Creations conducted their first ever press meet. 

The media meet was held at a Chennai star hotel, a day before its release!

It may sound incredible, but Billa 2 since its launch last June has not bothered to hold any press meets, not even an audio or a teaser launch. Except for Ajith its hero, the rest of the star cast and technical crew were there at the press meet along with the producers.

None of the producers and cast could speak in Tamil including director Chakri Toleti and Parvathy who are south Indians. The only exception was cameraman RD Rajasekhar who salvaged the show by talking in Tamil.

The others present at the press conference were producers Sunir Kheterpal, George Pious, director Chakri Toleti, actors Parvathy Omanakuttan, BrunaAbdullah, Vidyut Jamwal and Sudhanshu Pandey. 

Yuvan Shankar Raja the music director also was not present for the press briefing.

Billa II: Second big release after Endhiran

Billa 2 is all set to become one of the biggest releases of Ajith Kumar's career. The movie, which is hitting screens this Friday (July 13), is said to be the second big release after superstar Rajinikanth's Endhiran – The Robot. Rajinikanth's Endhiran was released in 2,050 screens in multiple languages. On the other end, Ajith Kumar's Billa 2 is ready to release in 1,200 screens, which is the highest for a Tamil movie in the current year. Reports say that in the US alone, it is being premiered in about 34 screens in 28 states on July 12. ATMUS Entertainment in association with GK Media, the overseas distributor which holds the rights of Billa 2 worldwide, is distributing the movie. In Tamil Nadu, Billa 2 is hitting in over 500 screens. The Telugu dubbed version will be released as David Billa. Both Tamil and Telugu versions will be released in Karnataka. The film is also being released with subtitles in France, Malaysia and Arabia. The movie, which is a sequel to Billa, also features Parvathy Omanakuttan, Bruna Abdullah, and Vidyut Jamwal in the important roles. Ajith Billa 2 Countdown –3 days

One of 2012’s most eagerly awaited film is Ajith’s Chakri Toleti directed Billa 2. The film produced by In Entertainment in association with Wide Angle Creations is releasing worldwide on July 13.

Billa 2 is an action packed film a prequel to Ajith’s Vishnuvardhan directed Billa (2007). Billa 2 focuses on how David, an ordinary man from the coastal Tamil Nadu, became Billa, a dreaded underworld don.

The film has Ajith, along with a supporting cast of Parvathy Omanakuttan, Bruna Abdullah, Vidyut Jamwal and Sudhanshu Pandey, all who are making their debut in Tamil cinema. It has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja and camera by RD Rajasekhar.

Billa 2 is being distributed in TamilNadu by Aascar Films V Ravichandran . It has been brought at a record price ofRs 26 Crore by Aascar Films, the highest for an Ajith film.

Though officially advance booking for the film is to start today (July 10) in Tamil Nadu, most of the theatres have opened their advance booking windows from late Sunday evening itself.

Kishore in Ajith's Vishnuvardhan film

Kishore, that terrific actor known for his methodical acting and hunger for meaty roles is going to play an important role in Ajith’s untitled film. 

The film directed by Vishnuvardhan and produced by AM Ratnam and his Sathya Sai Movies is making brisk progress.

The new Ajith film has Arya, Nayanthara, Taapsee Pannu, Mahesh Manjrekar in supporting roles. It has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
